A laser level replaces the string line, the chalk line and the second pair of hands. Here's the vocabulary your customer uses — and what to ask before you quote.
Every laser level projects a perfectly straight reference — a dot, a line, or a spinning 360° plane — so the crew can mark, mount, dig or pour to it. The differences that matter are how it levels itself and what it projects.
A pendulum or electronic servo levels the beam automatically as long as the tool sits within its self-leveling range (usually ±3–5° of level). Set it down roughly level and it does the rest — that's why one person can run the whole job.
The user levels the tool with bubble vials, like a classic spirit level that happens to shoot a beam. Cheaper, and for some jobs better — a torpedo laser held against a pipe, or a sheave alignment laser that follows the machine, not gravity.
Ask one question: "What are you trying to line up?" The answer maps to a type.
A spinning beam paints a 360° plane across the whole site — indoors or hundreds of feet outdoors with a detector.
Project crisp horizontal/vertical lines — or full 360° planes — on the surfaces in front of them. The interior workhorse.
Fire plumb and square reference points — up, down, front, left, right. Transfer a floor mark to the ceiling in one second.
A pocket spirit level that shoots a dot or line to 100'+. Magnetic base sticks to pipe, strut and steel studs.
Purpose-built beams for machinery: sheave & belt alignment, drive-train offset/angle/twist, and in-pipe grade lasers.
Not a level — a tape measure killer. Point, click, and read distance, area, volume, even indirect heights via Pythagoras.
The single most common customer question — and the easiest upsell conversation when you know the tradeoffs.
"Will your crew be working to the line by eye indoors? Go green — it's the difference between seeing the line at 60 feet and hunting for it. Running a detector outdoors anyway? Save the money and buy red."
Specs like ±1/16"/100' scare new sellers. They're just a ratio: maximum drift per distance.
±1/16"/100' means at 100 feet, the beam can be off by at most a sixteenth of an inch — either way. Double the distance, double the potential drift.
Rule of thumb: match accuracy to the trade — a tile setter never needs pipe-laser precision, and paying for it is money off the accessory budget.
Two numbers hide in every spec sheet:
Rotary ranges are quoted as a diameter — an 800' rotary covers 400' in every direction, over 11 acres.
Selling rule: outdoors = detector, always. If the quote has an outdoor rotary without a detector (or a kit that includes one), it's incomplete.
IP = Ingress Protection. First digit: dust (0–6). Second digit: water (0–8). Match the rating to where the tool lives.

Also worth quoting: JRT300 rotaries are impact-resistant to 6 feet — a tipped tripod is the #1 killer of jobsite rotaries — and the premium lines carry a 5-year warranty.
A rotary without a tripod, rod and detector is a paperweight. Accessories are where a good quote becomes a complete solution — and where attach revenue lives.
Take any beam outdoors and into daylight. Universal models (JLR300 for rotary, JLN300 for line) read both green and red — one detector for the whole fleet. Machine-mount detectors (40-6791/92) put grade in the excavator cab.
Check the thread: rotaries and big lasers use 5/8"-11, compact line/dot lasers use 1/4"-20. The 11' compression pole (40-6302) owns drop-ceiling and finished-room work.
The measuring stick the detector clamps to. Aluminum for value; fiberglass (non-conductive) anywhere near overhead power. 13' standard, up to 25' for deep cuts.
Magnetic X-targets make a beam readable at distance (match target color to beam color). Track mounts and 360° magnetic brackets put line lasers exactly where the work is.
