Five minutes to laser fluency

A laser level replaces the string line, the chalk line and the second pair of hands. Here's the vocabulary your customer uses — and what to ask before you quote.

Module 1

How a laser level works

Every laser level projects a perfectly straight reference — a dot, a line, or a spinning 360° plane — so the crew can mark, mount, dig or pour to it. The differences that matter are how it levels itself and what it projects.

Self-leveling (the default to sell)

A pendulum or electronic servo levels the beam automatically as long as the tool sits within its self-leveling range (usually ±3–5° of level). Set it down roughly level and it does the rest — that's why one person can run the whole job.

  • Pendulum: a magnetically damped pendulum, standard on line and dot lasers. A locking compensator protects it in the truck.
  • Electronic: servo motors level the head — standard on premium rotaries. Enables slope mode: intentionally tilting the plane to set grade or drainage.

Manual-leveling

The user levels the tool with bubble vials, like a classic spirit level that happens to shoot a beam. Cheaper, and for some jobs better — a torpedo laser held against a pipe, or a sheave alignment laser that follows the machine, not gravity.

  • Torpedo and tiling lasers are manual by design.
  • Most self-leveling lasers also have a manual mode that locks the pendulum so you can project a line at any angle (think stair rails).
Module 2

The six types — and the jobs they own

Ask one question: "What are you trying to line up?" The answer maps to a type.

Rotary lasers

A spinning beam paints a 360° plane across the whole site — indoors or hundreds of feet outdoors with a detector.

Owns Grading, excavation, concrete flatwork, foundations, drop ceilings, big interiors

Line lasers

Project crisp horizontal/vertical lines — or full 360° planes — on the surfaces in front of them. The interior workhorse.

Owns Framing, drywall, cabinets, trim, tile, electrical & plumbing rough-in

Dot lasers

Fire plumb and square reference points — up, down, front, left, right. Transfer a floor mark to the ceiling in one second.

Owns Drywall track top-and-bottom, deck posts, plumbing drops, HVAC hangers

Torpedo lasers

A pocket spirit level that shoots a dot or line to 100'+. Magnetic base sticks to pipe, strut and steel studs.

Owns Pipe pitch, conduit runs, quick checks — every service truck's glovebox

Industrial alignment

Purpose-built beams for machinery: sheave & belt alignment, drive-train offset/angle/twist, and in-pipe grade lasers.

Module 3

Red vs. green beams

The single most common customer question — and the easiest upsell conversation when you know the tradeoffs.

GreenBrite® green — visibility

  • The human eye sees green up to 400% more visibly than red at the same power — Johnson's GreenBrite® diodes are the flagship of the line.
  • The pick for bright interiors, big rooms, and any job where the crew works to the visible line all day (framing, drywall, ceilings, tile).
  • Tradeoffs: costs more and draws more battery (green diodes are hungrier — compare 5 hrs vs 10 hrs on the 40-6647/48 twins).

Red — value & runtime

  • Costs less, runs longer on the same batteries, and has been the jobsite standard for decades.
  • The right call outdoors with a detector — the detector "sees" the beam electronically, so paying for green visibility buys nothing.
  • Also right for dim interiors, short-range work, and budget-driven buys.

The 10-second script

"Will your crew be working to the line by eye indoors? Go green — it's the difference between seeing the line at 60 feet and hunting for it. Running a detector outdoors anyway? Save the money and buy red."

Module 4

Reading accuracy & range specs

Specs like ±1/16"/100' scare new sellers. They're just a ratio: maximum drift per distance.

Accuracy: ± drift / distance

±1/16"/100' means at 100 feet, the beam can be off by at most a sixteenth of an inch — either way. Double the distance, double the potential drift.

  • ±1/16"/100' — precision grade. Concrete flatwork, drainage, pipe. (JRT300 rotaries, 40-6541, 40-6698)
  • ±1/8"/35–50' — finish-carpentry grade. Cabinets, tile, framing. (JLN300 line lasers, dot lasers)
  • ±1/4"/20–35' — layout grade. Flooring reference, quick checks. (Tiling laser, entry cross-lines)

Rule of thumb: match accuracy to the trade — a tile setter never needs pipe-laser precision, and paying for it is money off the accessory budget.

Range: interior vs. "with detector"

Two numbers hide in every spec sheet:

  • Interior (visible) range — how far the eye can work to the beam indoors. Sunlight crushes this; even green beams wash out outside.
  • Exterior range with detector — how far a laser detector can find the beam electronically. This is the number that matters outdoors: a JRT300 rotary reads to a 4,000' diameter with its detector.

Rotary ranges are quoted as a diameter — an 800' rotary covers 400' in every direction, over 11 acres.

Selling rule: outdoors = detector, always. If the quote has an outdoor rotary without a detector (or a kit that includes one), it's incomplete.

Module 5

Durability: what the IP rating buys

IP = Ingress Protection. First digit: dust (0–6). Second digit: water (0–8). Match the rating to where the tool lives.

Also worth quoting: JRT300 rotaries are impact-resistant to 6 feet — a tipped tripod is the #1 killer of jobsite rotaries — and the premium lines carry a 5-year warranty.

Module 6

Accessories: the second line of every laser quote

A rotary without a tripod, rod and detector is a paperweight. Accessories are where a good quote becomes a complete solution — and where attach revenue lives.

Detectors

Take any beam outdoors and into daylight. Universal models (JLR300 for rotary, JLN300 for line) read both green and red — one detector for the whole fleet. Machine-mount detectors (40-6791/92) put grade in the excavator cab.

Tripods & poles

Check the thread: rotaries and big lasers use 5/8"-11, compact line/dot lasers use 1/4"-20. The 11' compression pole (40-6302) owns drop-ceiling and finished-room work.

Grade rods

The measuring stick the detector clamps to. Aluminum for value; fiberglass (non-conductive) anywhere near overhead power. 13' standard, up to 25' for deep cuts.

Targets & mounts

Magnetic X-targets make a beam readable at distance (match target color to beam color). Track mounts and 360° magnetic brackets put line lasers exactly where the work is.
